Volkswagen Golf - Video tutorial

Model: Volkswagen Golf MK 4, Golf IV, Golf 4 - Years 1997-2003
Part: Window motor
Operation: Do-it-yourself window lifter motor replacement

The window lift is a great ally, especially on warm days, a valid alternative to air conditioning. Having it defective could therefore be an annoying problem, especially if it gets stuck when lowered. Now we will expose this procedure, rather delicate but feasible even without the help of the electrician. So let's start by turning off the internal light bulb by pushing the latch inwards; after that, we remove the support handle, (using a pair of plastic tools and then using our hands) and the light bulb slide. Inside the handle there are two Phillips screws to remove and three at the bottom of the door: note that there should also be another one at the top. If not, you can easily find it. Now, let's start removing the hooks; if wooden or plastic supports have been placed to help us with the removal of the plastic, let's remove them. Now we can proceed with the removal of the plastic itself, being careful; we disconnect the window switch and remove the cable from the door handle. We now remove the two round plastic covers (which give us access to the clamps that support the glass mechanism) and remove the bolts of 10 that hold the panel; having done this, we must very calmly disconnect all the electrical connectors. There are 3 screws that hold the motor; we remove the plug that goes to the opening mechanism and remove the gray panel. In this case, the plastic guides of the glass are destroyed: better to spend a little more to make them last. Plastic parts are attached to these metal clamps, from the glass. Now, let's mount the new panel by doing the reverse procedure as before; align the screw holes well with the new panel and screw everything back together. Now, insert the glass in the terminals and mount the motor by reconnecting the relative wiring; we tighten the clamp bolts taking care not to overdo it in order to avoid damage to the glass. Let's check that it works correctly and refit the cover of the door and the handle. Easier done than said!
