How to Replace the Power Steering Pump on a Volkswagen Polo or Lupo 1.0

To replace the power steering pump on a Volkswagen Polo (or Lupo), first safely lift the vehicle. Do not rely solely on your jack; support it with axle stands.

Then remove the front right wheel and the wheel arch liner. In the video, the pump was broken and the pulley had come off the shaft.

Remove the belt and unscrew the four bolts holding the pump. Using a 17mm and a 22mm spanner, unscrew the connections and extract the pump.

Remove the shaft. Refit the pump, securing it with its four bolts.

Now reposition the shaft, securing it with its three screws. Position the new pulley, ensuring it is correctly aligned and taut in its path, adjusting the tensioner as needed.

Refit the wheel arch liner and the front right wheel. Lower the vehicle and top up the power steering fluid.

At this point, with the vehicle running, perform quick full turns of the steering wheel to the left and right; check if more fluid is needed in the power steering. The video includes a review, but by following the same steps, you can change the part.
