If the gear knob on your Volkswagen Golf is worn and you want to replace it, this guide provides all the information needed for a complete DIY operation. First, use a flat tool to detach the clips that hold the fabric to the centre console, taking care not to break the clips.

Now the gear stick is visible, and you can remove the metal clip that secures the knob to the stick using pliers. You can now remove the old knob and fabric, and take the opportunity to dust off the various parts.

Take the new knob, which contains the securing clip inside. Insert the knob, tighten the new clip, and reposition the fabric securely onto the console.
