How to Drain and Completely Replace the Gear Oil in a Golf 5

Model: Volkswagen Golf MK 5, Golf 5, Golf V - Years 2003-2008

Start by putting the gear lever in neutral and pulling the handbrake. Open the bonnet and remove the fuse box cover, air filter, and battery to gain full access. Press the engine selector lever down and turn the black plastic lever next to it clockwise to keep the lever in the lowered position. Now lift the car with a jack to remove the engine cover by unscrewing the Torx screws. The engine oil sump and gearbox oil sump will now be visible. Using a 17 mm Allen key, first unscrew the filler cap (yellow) and then the drain plug (green), placing a large container underneath to collect the oil. Once drained, re-screw everything and release the lever movement using the lever. Disconnect the oil sensor connector, then remove the sensor by unscrewing it and take off the black snap-on cap to prevent the new oil from flooding the conduit. Finally, insert a tube into the sensor hole and pour in the new oil; once all the oil is in, reassemble everything.
