The timing belt synchronises the operation of the crankshaft with the camshaft (which controls the movement of the pistons) and, in some cases, also the operation of the water pump, which cools the engine. The belt is made from a plastic material that is sufficiently elastic and durable to withstand continuous external stresses. Its failure almost always causes significant damage to the engine. The vehicle's maintenance manual indicates its lifespan in kilometres or years. Establishing general parameters, we can state that the belt should be replaced: Between 62,000 and 112,000 miles travelled. After 5 or 6 years of use.
