How to Determine When to Replace the Timing Belt on a Volkswagen Passat

On what basis can we determine if it is time to change the timing belt? Open the bonnet and listen to the noise the engine makes. If you hear a strange noise, like something dragging laboriously, you may not be sure if it is the timing belt. It could be the auxiliary belt, which is a rubber belt in the same manner and could make a similar noise. However, it is in a much more accessible location, and you can try to remove it from its housing. If the noise stops, it means that was the issue, and you will have already done half the work. Lift the vehicle, remove the wheel from the passenger side, and access the auxiliary belt. Remove it and restart the engine. Unfortunately, the noise is still present. Then it is indeed the timing belt, and you will need to replace it.
