If the steering suddenly becomes stiff and the red steering wheel warning light illuminates on the dashboard, it indicates a problem with the electric power steering, which is integrated into the steering box on this model. You can resolve the issue without replacing the entire steering box, just the control unit-motor assembly, which can be removed by lifting the vehicle and unscrewing the two Torx 40 bolts that secure the assembly to the steering box. Note that there are two models of this control unit, and the difference lies in the shape of the main power connector; it is advisable to purchase a refurbished one rather than a new one.
