Head Gasket Problem

Model: Dodge Caliber MK 1 - Years 2006-2012
Part: Cylinder head

If the engine runs unevenly as if, in colloquial terms, it is missing a few beats, then a problem with the spark plugs or ignition coils can be suspected. In fact, checking the fault memory in the engine management unit reveals a fault related to the misfire of cylinder one (cylinders are counted from the timing side). Leaving the engine running, disconnecting the first coil keeps the defect unchanged. Additionally, checking the operating parameters shows that the coolant temperature seems a bit excessive, which also suggests a fault in the sealing of the head gasket. As a final test, remove the ignition coils and spark plugs from the first and second cylinders and try to start the engine; water sprays out from the first cylinder, confirming the head gasket problem (obviously, with water entering the cylinder, the spark plug cannot ignite the mixture, causing the engine to run unevenly). This demonstrates how experience surpasses the effectiveness of diagnostic tools; indeed, relying solely on the fault code would have inappropriately led to replacing the coil without resolving the underlying issue.

For this simple operation, you will need to release the bonnet from the appropriate lever to lift it. Next, for safety and to protect the more delicate circuits, disconnect the cables from the battery. You can now work directly on the motor located under the air intake box. Remove it by unscrewing the various bolts, then working from underneath your vehicle, reach the motor in question. Disconnect the connector that powers it and unscrew the bolts that secure it. Now, simply install the new one.
