How to Convert a Cigarette Lighter to a Dual USB Port

Let's see how to convert a cigarette lighter (in this case, a Fiat Stilo, but the system is valid for all vehicles) into a dual USB socket. You can find the dual USB on AliExpress with code 1005003194817235 for £3.24 (free delivery for orders over £20). Remove the cigarette lighter using a screwdriver on the edges to lift it out and disconnect the connector. There are usually three wires: positive, negative, and neutral. Use a tester to identify the wires. Lift the tabs on the connectors and pull the wires from the old connectors (keep them if you want to reinstall the cigarette lighter in the future). The USB socket already has a built-in 12V/5V converter. Connect the positive wire to the positive terminal of the socket, and do the same with the negative wire (be careful with the polarity: reversing it can cause damage). Insulate the connections with electrical tape. Test with a phone to check if it charges, insert the new socket into the original space, and you're done!
