How to Check the Play of the Turbocharger on the Fiat Stilo

If you hear a whistling noise coming from the engine bay during acceleration, this is an initial symptom of damage and/or wear to the turbocharger. What happens is that the guide bushes of the core assembly wear out, causing it to rotate eccentrically, which generates vibrations that then translate into a whistling sound. If the eccentricity is excessive, it may even cause the blades to break, risking them entering the engine's intake and causing damage. To check if the turbo shaft has play, you can simply disconnect the hose from the compressor side and test if the shaft rotation is free and if there is any play.
