How do you use a ten-speed automatic transmission? Isn't that a bit too many? Yet the automatic Ford Mustang has 10 speeds: this is because having many gears available keeps the engine in a RPM range where efficiency is higher. This way, you definitely get better performance; the gears are shorter, and the response is improved.
