What Does the Message "Parktronic Not Functioning, Consult Manual" Mean on Our Mercedes?

What does the message "Parktronic Not Functioning, Consult Manual" really mean? The Parktronic system (or PTS) uses ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers: when you see that message, it means the control unit has disabled the system to avoid false alarms. The most likely causes are dirty or damaged sensors: rain, mud, or snow covering the sensors. Often, simply cleaning them will make the message disappear. However, it could also be a sensor damaged by a bump (even a small hit to the bumper can displace it and render it inactive) or defective (they may have lost sensitivity). It could also be a wiring issue (the wire may be corroded or broken). On older models, the problem could also be due to a failed Parktronic control unit. You can drive normally, but you must be very careful when parking. Have the system checked as soon as possible.
