How to Repair a Hole in the Muffler

Over the years and miles, rust can create real holes or lesions in the muffler. Since it is made of ferrous materials, it can be repaired with good welding and possibly the addition of some iron "patches." This is what we see in this video. Since the rust has completely corroded and seized the bolts, it was necessary to cut them with a grinder to remove the muffler. With the muffler in hand, we can see that the rust has created a hole about 5x3 in and a long lesion along the pipe. To achieve good welding, it is important to thoroughly clean the surface, but that is not enough; experience is especially needed because achieving good welds is not easy. Often, there is the illusion of having made a good weld, but that is not the case. However, if you are familiar with the welder, it will not be a problem. For lesions, just use the welder, while for holes, you need to apply custom patches made from a thick iron sheet. After finishing welding, remove the excess parts of the weld, and if you want to give the muffler an even newer appearance, polish it completely and paint it with high-temperature paint. Don’t forget to clean the rust from the joint area between the muffler and the collector. Once everything is reassembled, to ensure there are no further leaks, simply cover the muffler with your hand for a few seconds; if you don't hear any hissing, you've done a good job.
