The timing belt is one of the most critical components of an engine, as its failure could cause severe damage: the timing belt is associated with the synchronisation between the movement of the pistons and the opening and closing of the valves. Therefore, a sudden failure of the timing belt would result in the loss of this synchronisation, leading to a collision between pistons and valves and all related damage. Replacing the timing belt is essential maintenance that should not be overlooked (even though it is one of the more costly tasks) and must be carried out according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Recent advancements in construction technologies and the quality of new materials have extended this maintenance interval, with the timing belt replacement recommended at 75,000 miles or within 5 years. For the new 1.6 engine, the interval has been further extended to 100,000 miles or 6 years. The Achilles' heel of the 1.5 engine remains the bearings, which should be replaced simultaneously during the first timing belt change.
