Reasons why the engine of an Opel Movano is knocking

In this video we hear what is defined as the "knocking in the head" of an Opel Movano, (also known as detonation). Under normal conditions, the air/fuel mixture burns in a controlled and progressive manner. Detonation, on the other hand, is an uncontrolled explosion of the residual part of the mixture, which occurs due to high temperature and pressure. This secondary explosion collides with the main flame front, creating a shock wave that hammers the piston, cylinder head, and connecting rods. The noise is a characteristic "metallic ticking" under acceleration. A very common cause with a commercial vehicle is the use of cheap fuel: the low octane number makes it prone to detonation. Another problem could be a malfunction of the engine control unit that controls an excessive advance on the spark plug. Another reason could be carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, very likely if the vehicle is used a lot in urban cycles. Furthermore, there could be cooling problems in the engine, a fertile ground for detonation; a too lean air/fuel mixture could be another reason. A clogged EGR valve can also cause detonation.
