Timing chain elongation, resulting in noise and starting difficulties, is a fairly common fault in Opel Meriva B models equipped with the 1.6 CDTi engine producing 81 kW. The related kit has even been modified to prevent the same problem from recurring after replacement; the main difficulty with this task is that you practically need to disassemble the entire engine and remove it from its bay, as the timing chain is located on the gearbox side and there is not enough space to perform this maintenance directly on the vehicle, perhaps because the designers did not anticipate that the timing chain would need replacing.
