In this video, we see the Start & Stop system that Peugeot has launched on the Peugeot 308 and 508 range, featuring a reversible starter alternator positioned in place of the flywheel, operating in two modes, as a generator and as a starter device when resuming motion. This evolution of the Start & Stop system significantly reduces harmful emissions, establishing the e-HDI engines as a benchmark. The engine does not stop when the vehicle is stationary, but when travelling at speeds below 12 miles/h with the gearbox in neutral: this proves particularly useful in city traffic. When slowing down, the synchronous motor acts as an alternator, delivering up to 2.5 kW of power and functioning as an engine brake. When it is time to move off again, it reverses its mode of operation, becoming a synchronous motor and converting the electrical energy it receives into mechanical energy that allows the crankshaft to rotate, thus restarting the diesel engine.
