The 1.6 TPH of PSA/BMW: engine with many problems

In this video we talk about an engine with many problems: the 1.6 THP by PSA/BMW which is an engine found in many models, such as the Peugeot 308, Mini Cooper S and DS3. It has brilliant performance, good torque, is compact and lightweight but is highly debated due to oil leaks on the turbo, valve guides and piston rings. This engine does not forgive poor maintenance, so it is essential to periodically check the oil level and schedule replacements. It is also recommended to overhaul the turbo and replace gaskets with a higher quality kit. Despite this engine having a timing chain, it tends to stretch, evidenced by a metallic noise during acceleration: the cause is insufficient hydraulic tension or degraded oil, so it is better to prevent and replace it every 100,000 km (instead of the 150,000 recommended by Peugeot). Additionally, warning lights frequently come on the dashboard: it is recommended to use an OBD2 reader to avoid random diagnoses. The YouTuber gives useful tips for proper maintenance of this engine: change the oil every 10,000 km with quality oil and use original filters; avoid turning off the engine immediately after pushing it (let the turbo cool down); warm up the engine before pushing it. If buying a used car, prefer models after 2015 that have fewer issues. The 1.6 THP is a sporty engine, but requires special attention; with good maintenance, it can provide satisfaction. Unfortunately, if neglected, maintenance costs can become significant.
