How to Adjust the Gear Actuator on a Smart ForTwo 451

This guide shows how to adjust the gear actuator on a Smart ForTwo 451. This procedure is necessary when the gearbox does not engage reverse. A diagnostic device is required. Lift the rear of the vehicle and disconnect the battery, then remove the three E10 bolts and take out the actuator; this component is located on the left side of the engine. Remove the Torx screws from the cover to access the internal part of the actuator. Clean off the old grease and apply new grease, then refit the component. Now, connect the diagnostic device to the OBD port and perform the actuator relearning procedure. Once completed, check the correct operation of the transmission.
