How the 4WD System Works on Toyota RAV4

In this video, we see that, unlike traditional off-road vehicles with a locking differential, the RAV4 has an intelligent and predominantly front system that intervenes automatically when necessary. The basic concept is: "front-wheel drive with assistance", meaning the system is normally 100% on the front wheels. The 4WD engages automatically in two main scenarios: if the front wheels start to slip (on mud, gravel, or in heavy rain), and during sudden acceleration. The heart of the system is a centre connector (the 4WD control unit) located at the rear. This component is not a lockable differential but contains an electronically controlled clutch and electromagnets. The car's sensors detect a difference in rotation between the front and rear wheels; the control unit sends an electric current to the electromagnets (inside the centre connector) that attract and compress the clutch discs, sending a percentage of the driving power (up to 50%) to the rear axle. It is not a system for extreme off-roading: it is designed for safety and stability on slippery roads or for light off-roading.
