Removing and Cleaning Drums and Shoes, Replacing Brake Linings

Model: Toyota Land Cruiser MK 7, J80 - Years 1990-1997

For this operation, you will need the following tools: a 12mm spanner, a set of screwdrivers, brake cleaning fluid, rags, and a service manual. First, lift the vehicle and remove the wheel bolts and the wheel itself. Unscrew the drum screws and take it off. Using a wire brush attached to a drill, remove dirt and rust from both the inside and outside of the drum. Spray cleaning fluid inside the shoe assembly and remove the retaining springs. Take both shoes off the support. Generously spray cleaning fluid inside the brake. Clean the entire inside of the brake with a toothbrush. Unscrew the brake screws and remove all components. Thoroughly clean all brake parts from rust, mud, and deposits to prevent seizing.
Prepare the new linings. Clean and grease the moving parts. Carefully reassemble all parts, including the springs in their designated guides. Secure the pins with circlips. Refit the remaining springs in their positions. Ensure all components move freely. Lubricate the drum and install it. Fit the return springs. Install the brake cable. Fit the lining assembly and install the cable. Refit the remaining parts. Spray more cleaning fluid on the linings and wipe with a cloth. Refit the drum and ensure correct operation by pulling the handbrake. Check the handbrake's functionality.
