How Does Start and Stop Work?

The principle of start & stop is simple: when the vehicle is stationary, the system automatically switches off the engine; when you set off again, just press the clutch (or release the brake in automatics) and the engine restarts instantly. The aim is to reduce fuel consumption and lower harmful emissions. To withstand the continuous starts, the vehicle is equipped with a reinforced starter motor, a specific battery (AGM/EFB), and specific sensors and control units. The system is very sensitive and sometimes does not work; for example, if the battery is not sufficiently charged, if the sensors are faulty, or if the external temperatures are extreme (both hot and cold). Even though the components are reinforced, they work much harder and therefore tend to last less; additionally, an AFM/EFB battery is more expensive than a standard battery, and the starter motor also has a higher cost. Therefore, it is a useful system for those who do a lot of city driving, but for those who travel a lot on rural roads, it may not be worth it.
