What are Self-Resetting PPTC Fuses?

PPTC fuses (Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient) are electronic protection devices that reset themselves after a fault, unlike traditional fuses, which burn out and need replacing. Under normal conditions, their resistance is low, and current flows freely through the circuit. In case of overcurrent, the heat generated by the excess current causes the polymer around the PPTC to expand; the resistance increases dramatically, interrupting the current flow. This protects the circuit from damage. Once the cause of the fault is removed, the PPTC cools down, the polymer contracts, and the resistance returns to low, restoring the circuit without replacements. There are significant advantages over traditional fuses: no maintenance; they are very compact; gradual intervention based on the severity of the fault. They are used in portable devices, but also in automotive applications, protecting sensitive motors or circuits. They have limitations, as they are not instantaneous: they depend on the excess current, and after intervention, they need time to cool down and reset.

How to Open the Bonnet on the Lancia Y
