Why Do Bumpers Peel and How to Repaint Them

This explains why plastic bumpers peel: primarily due to lack of sanding and failure to use a specific primer for plastic; the paint does not adhere and peels off after a short time. Additionally, the plastic primer has a recoat timer: it must be covered within 30 minutes of drying, otherwise it loses its gripping effect. During moulding, plastic is mixed with release agents to facilitate separation from the mould; these residues can resurface and over time cause the paint to lift. They can be removed with flame treatment. Plastic expands and contracts much more than metal, while paint has limited elasticity and can crack or peel over time. Moreover, if too many layers of paint are used, it becomes too rigid and cannot follow the movements of the plastic, intensifying defects. Remove the detached paint, flame the entire surface, sand with 600/100 grit without scratching too much, clean with anti-silicone, apply a flexible primer and within 30 minutes apply a matte base coat = 1 light coat + 2 full base coats, then apply the clear coat (again, one light coat and one full coat) and allow to dry for 34 hours before reassembly.
