Electric cars require specific tyres, different from those with internal combustion engines: tyres for EVs are designed to meet three fundamental needs, represented by what is called the "performance triangle". EVs are very heavy; tyre friction is one of the main enemies of range, and without the noise of the engine, the sound of the tyres becomes very noticeable. Therefore, manufacturers use various technical solutions: specific compounds and tread patterns, structural reinforcements, optimised tread, sound-absorbing materials, and a new classification known as the "load index (HL)" which indicates a maximum load higher than even the XL tyres for heavier vehicles. Using standard tyres on an EV is not prohibited, but it may lead to premature wear, reduced range, high noise levels, and compromised performance. Even more so than with thermal vehicles, rotation is essential.
