Let's look at the symptoms of a faulty EGR valve, which vary depending on whether the valve is stuck open or closed. In the first case (which is the most common), you will experience irregular idling and shaking, with frequent stalls even during manoeuvres; loss of power and poor performance; black smoke from the exhaust and a strong smell of diesel; increased fuel consumption to compensate for the lack of power. If the valve is stuck closed (which is a less common scenario, but still possible), you will hear knocking, especially at mid-range RPMs, the engine will overheat, and it will fail emissions tests with very high nitrogen oxide emissions. The universal symptom is the engine warning light (yellow) being illuminated.
