How to Adjust the Valves of a Four-Stroke Engine

To adjust the valves in a four-stroke engine, you need to remove the cylinder head cover to access the pushrods and rockers. Locate cylinder 1 and consequently cylinder 4. Rotate the camshaft with a 16 mm spanner until the position of the intake and exhaust valves of the fourth cylinder are 'balanced', meaning they have the same opening. Use a feeler gauge to check the clearance of each valve by loosening the nut on top of the valve and placing the feeler gauge between the top of the valve stem and the rocker. The required clearance between the valve and rocker should be 0.15 mm for the intake valves and 0.20 mm for the exhaust valves. Once you have found the correct thickness, tighten the nut to secure the correct clearance.
