In this video tutorial, see how piston rings work on a 4-stroke engine. In this case, there are 5 rings: 2 are similar to those on 2-stroke pistons, where the first ring simply retains the exhaust gases; the second ring assists the first, and there is an additional scraping edge that removes oil from the cylinder; additionally, there is a third ring which is the oil scraper and consists of three parts: the first is a very thin band, the second is the spring, and the third is another ring (together they form the oil scraper). The operation is simple: the first ring moves oil from the cylinder into the spring, which then moves through holes in the piston and into the piston itself; the last ring simply moves oil from the cylinder bore to the sump.
