What are the signs of a faulty catalytic converter? Firstly, the engine usually stalls shortly after starting, there is poor acceleration, and strange noises come from the exhaust system when accelerating or increasing speed. Another important sign is a significant increase in fuel consumption. Additionally, a strong smell of exhaust fumes can be detected inside the cabin, especially when the engine has been idle for a while. A reduced volume of exhaust gases comes from the exhaust pipe, and most importantly, the engine warning light illuminates. To check the catalytic converter, turn off the engine and let it cool for an hour and a half. Carefully remove the catalytic converter and check for contamination, melting, or deterioration. If contamination is detected, have it cleaned by a specialist. If deformation or melting is noted, it will need to be replaced.
