In modern vehicles, it is no longer the case that when you brake, you simply activate a switch that turns on the stop light. Now, cars route everything through a control unit. It is the control unit that activates the stop light, receiving the signal from the brake pedal and reducing fuel flow. However, if the switch fails, it can cause issues because it informs the control unit that you are braking when you are not, perhaps you are actually accelerating. Consequently, the control unit reduces fuel flow, and the ABS and traction control lights illuminate. So what do you do? You take the car to the garage, but there are no errors in the control unit, and the only possibility is that it happens while you are testing it, so the mechanic can notice.
