How ESP Works and Why You Shouldn't Disable It

If you drive too fast or steer too sharply, lateral forces can make the vehicle unstable. ESP intervenes on these forces. ESP consists of: a wheel speed sensor on each wheel; a speed sensor measures the vehicle's rotation about its axis; a steering angle sensor measures the manoeuvre the driver intends to perform. The control unit calculates based on the sensor signals and determines when and how to intervene. The hydraulic unit increases or decreases the braking pressure at the wheels. What happens during the first steering manoeuvre? The driver quickly swerves left; this manoeuvre is transmitted to the control unit, the speed sensor indicates understeer, meaning the vehicle is heading straight towards the obstacle. In a very short time, ESP brakes the left rear wheel so that the vehicle can execute the necessary turn. What happens during a counter-steer? The vehicle is then counter-steered, turning with the rear to the left; the right wheel speed is higher than necessary, and in this case, ESP brakes the left front wheel, reducing the wheel speed and instead of skidding, the vehicle remains stable.
