How to Replace a Handbrake Cable

Next, loosen the tension on the cable and lift the vehicle by removing the rear wheels, supporting the vehicle on sturdy axle stands. The handbrake may be connected to rear calipers, and you will need to disconnect the cables from the cable brackets, or to the brake shoes, in which case you will need to remove the calipers, the caliper brackets, as well as the brake discs or drums. These last two components may be difficult to remove, and you may require specific tools. Take note of the position of all components: take a photo if necessary. Remove the springs with great care. All cables and their fastening elements must be disconnected and cleaned from the suspension components and the bodywork. Now disconnect the cables from the handbrake control lever. It’s time to install the new cables and all previously removed components in reverse order. Adjust the handbrake shoes, ensuring they are positioned at a certain distance from the drum, then check the handbrake by operating it several times and adjusting the position of the shoes accordingly.
