If you ignore the warnings your vehicle gives when the timing belt is about to break (the belt is hard, fraying, etc.) and it eventually breaks, it can cause significant damage. If the timing belt breaks while you are driving, you cannot know the position of the camshafts; the valves are most likely stuck open. When you attempt to restart the engine, the piston hits the open valves, bending them and causing major damage. When this happens, you must remove the entire cylinder head, which is a very costly job. Therefore, the advice is: maintain your car and keep an eye on the timing belt. It’s an expensive job, but never as costly as rebuilding the entire engine.
