In this video, learn about some issues that occur with your tyres during summer thunderstorms. A summer tyre with tread close to the legal limit can grip the road well in dry conditions but struggles during heavy downpours, where large puddles can form, leading to a phenomenon known as "aquaplaning". This occurs when the tyre cannot adhere to the surface and literally floats on the water. This phenomenon is very dangerous as the vehicle loses grip and can understeer. Another effect during these summer storms is that the temperature of the road surface can drop sharply, by more than 20 degrees, causing the TPMS sensors to trigger a puncture warning. Therefore, if you are driving in summer under a heavy storm and your vehicle indicates a drop in pressure or a tyre puncture, rest assured that it is likely just the sudden drop in temperature of the road/tyre being reported.
