It is better to brake first and then engage the gear to avoid stressing the transmission components. Additionally, when stuck in traffic or at a traffic light, do not shift to neutral; the temperature of the components will not rise, and the clutch will not wear out. Never shift to 'P' before the car is completely stopped, as repeatedly doing this can break the 'pawl' that holds the car in place. Therefore, brake, engage the handbrake, and then shift to 'P'. Another mistake is not using the handbrake for the same reason: the weight of the car rests on the 'pawl', and the handbrake has a greater capacity to hold the car still.
