How to Add a Button to Display Fuel Consumption on a Volkswagen Polo 6R

To add a button that displays consumption data on the Volkswagen Polo 6R, you will need a thin electrical wire, a normally open button, heat shrink tubing, and insulating tape. Start by disconnecting the battery and gently pull out the instrument cluster, which is held in place by clips - from the dashboard. Remove the cluster, and behind it, you will find a black and white connector: locate pin number 21, connect the wire to this pin (from the wire side, not from the connector side) and secure it well, without damaging the adjacent pins. Bring the other end of the wire to ground through the button, and secure it in a convenient location on the steering wheel or dashboard. Now you can reconnect the connector to the instrument cluster and reinstall it in the dashboard: also reconnect the battery. Now, every time you press the button, pin 21 is grounded for a moment: this signal simulates pressing the button on the light switch, and the instrument cluster will change the display (from range to average consumption, to average speed, etc.) with each press.
