Let's see how to change the spark plugs on a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 FSI. On many of these engines, accessing the spark plugs requires removing the intake manifold, so this guide is correct for direct injection engines. Open the bonnet and unscrew the oil dipstick support: unscrew the intake manifold fixings, unclip the ignition cable clips, disconnect the sensor and vacuum hose, unscrew the remaining screws, and remove the intake manifold.

Cover the intake with a microfiber cloth to prevent dirt from falling into the engine. Now, disconnect the spark plug cable connectors, clean the well from dirt and dust, unscrew the spark plugs with a socket, prepare the new spark plugs by applying a thin layer of anti-seize lubricant, and screw them in by hand to avoid cross-threading.

Then, tighten with a torque wrench to 25 Nm, insert the spark plug cables, reassemble the intake manifold, the oil dipstick with its support, and the engine cover. That's it.
