Lambda Sensor Replacement Instructions

Model: Volkswagen Passat 3BG, B5 - Years 1996-2005

The lambda sensor can detect the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gases; by comparing the oxygen present in the ambient air, measured at the other end of the sensor, the amount of air in the exhaust gases is indirectly determined. The sensor then transmits this information via an electrical signal to the ECU (engine control unit), which regulates the intake of fuel and air into the combustion chamber: proper functioning is therefore absolutely essential for the engine's regular operation and especially for fuel consumption. It is recommended to replace the sensor when the engine is cold and to obtain the appropriate open-ended spanner to fit despite the cable; to access the sensor, remove the coolant reservoir, detach the sensor, disconnect the connector, and proceed in reverse for the installation of the new one.
