To change the battery in the remote of a Volkswagen Passat B5, first lift the key. Then, using a small screwdriver, separate the upper part of the remote from the lower part. Now separate the lower part, which can be divided into two halves. With the same small screwdriver, remove the button cell battery from its housing. It is a CR2032, which you can find for a few pounds at a supermarket or newsagent. Reinsert it in the correct orientation and close the lower part of the remote. Now you can reattach the upper part. The job is complete.
