To adjust the handbrake on a Volkswagen Golf, completely remove the cover located at the back of the centre armrest using a tool. Once this cover is removed, you can fully pull out the ashtray compartment to access the underlying parts. Here, you will find the bolt that allows you to adjust the handbrake's tension: tightening the bolt will make the lever harder, while loosening it will make the handbrake lever softer.
