Replacing Rear Suspension Control Arm Bushing

Model: BMW Serie 3 E46 - Years 1998-2006
Part: Control arm

Lift the vehicle on a lift and remove the wheel corresponding to the suspension you need to work on: you can then access the control arm of the suspension, which is a triangular support connected to the wheel and the frame via a ball joint and to the frame itself through a bushing (silent block) that needs to be replaced.
Loosen and remove the nut securing the ball joint of the control arm to the wheel; insert a lever between the wheel support and the ball joint to extract it from its seat (this is a forced conical fit, so a lot of force will be needed).
Then remove the support of the other ball joint directly from the frame by loosening the two fastening bolts. Finally, remove the fastening bolts of the bushing support and remove the entire control arm: now you can service the suspension on a bench and replace the damaged part.
Secure the arm in a vise and use a suitable puller to remove the bushing (silent block) along with the support. Using a hydraulic press, carefully secure the bushing support and extract the bushing that needs to be replaced with a properly sized punch: the insertion of the new bushing into the support should always be done with the press.
Grease the inside of the bushing and reinstall it on the suspension arm by tapping it with a rubber mallet.
Then remove the nut securing the ball joint with the support still in place and extract it with the appropriate tool (ball joint puller); then reinstall this ball joint with support to the vehicle frame.
Reposition the suspension control arm and carefully tighten the nuts and locking bolts.
