To replace the gear knob on a BMW 1 Series, grasp the old knob and the leather gaiter underneath. Pull the knob upwards while turning it counterclockwise and pulling the leather gaiter downwards. This will detach the old knob from the end of the lever, allowing you to insert the new replacement part. Ensure the new knob is securely fixed to the end of the lever, adjusting the gaiter as well. After installation, check that the new knob does not cause any issues when changing gears.
