How to Unlock the Automatic Transmission on the BMW 3 Series Touring

To unlock the automatic transmission of a BMW 320 Touring to shift from "P" to "N" so the car can move, first turn on the vehicle's instrument cluster without starting the engine (to turn on the cluster with the button, press the button without pressing any pedals, or press the button briefly while holding the brake pedal), then lift the shift boot to expose the lever underneath; with the boot raised, pull the lever under the shift rod until you hear a click and the gear lever shifts from "P" to "N"; now you can move the car.
