What are the airbumps on the Citroen C4 Cactus exactly? They are not decorations, but a functional system to protect the bodywork from small everyday accidents, such as tight parking, door dings from other cars, supermarket cart bumps, scratches while transporting bicycles, all impacts that would cause dents and scratches on a traditional car. They are also a strong stylistic element that makes the C4 immediately recognizable; they are not solid rubber; they have an outer layer of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) which is a much more durable material than common rubber; underneath the surface there are air bubbles that, when pressed, compress to absorb the energy of the impact, cushioning the blow before it reaches the sheet metal.
