How to save the oil-bath timing belt of the Puretech 1.2 engine

The Puretech engine from 2017 in the Citroen C3 in the video (and not only in this model) has a weak point: the oil-bath timing belt which, after only 45,000 miles (approximately 72,000 kilometres), has failed. The material has degraded and crumbled, clogging the oil pump and causing severe engine damage. This is a known problem, but there is a solution. The manufacturer has updated the replacement with a new generation belt, more resistant to wear and made with improved materials. Additionally, it is recommended to replace the engine oil with a specific low-viscosity oil (5W30 or 0W30) and to perform changes more frequently, every 5,000-6,000 miles, to reduce debris accumulation. If your Puretech is still under warranty, you may receive a free replacement of the belt; otherwise, take preventive action: change the belt and oil pump before a failure occurs, which costs much less than a complete overhaul. Check the chassis number on the Citroen website to see if your engine is among the affected batches. Careful maintenance can save the engine.
