Replacing the Cylinder Head Gasket

When replacing the cylinder head gasket, it is good practice to have the head itself skimmed to eliminate any warping caused by overheating; after skimming, check the flatness of the surface using a straight edge and a feeler gauge for valves; perform the same check on the cylinder block. Using a tap, re-thread the bolt holes for the head, ensuring no debris ends up in the cylinders. At this point, apply the new gasket and the head, using a new set of bolts to secure it, tightening them in a cross pattern with both a torque wrench and a calibrated spanner.
