As we can see in the video, the drum brake is a hydraulic activation brake: when the brake pedal is pressed, the brake fluid puts pressure on a hydraulic cylinder; the cylinder pushes shoes against the inner surface of the drum, creating friction. The friction between the shoes and the drum slows down the wheel.

When the pedal is released, the return springs bring the shoes back to their initial position. If the drum brake also serves as a parking brake - which is usually the case - then there is also a steel cable for the activation of the shoes.
