Don't Wait Until the Last Minute to Change the Timing Belt

The video shows a classic but unfortunately very common situation. The owner brought the car in at 116,000 miles thinking it was the right time, but the belt was in a very critical condition. As the YouTuber rightly points out, the belt is not eternal; it is made of rubber and degrades over time and mileage: visible cracks are a sign that the rubber has lost its elasticity and strength. A belt in that state is very close to breaking, and in an engine like the 1.4 Fire (which is an interference engine), a broken belt means bent valves and damaged pistons: the result is damage worth thousands of pounds, instead of the few hundred for a scheduled change. Moreover, don't just look at the mileage: a belt that has covered few miles but is 10 years old must be replaced. Reaching 112,000 miles on a small car is risky. A proper interval is 75,000 miles or 5/6 years.
