How to Adjust the Handbrake on a Fiat Ducato X290

If the handbrake on the Fiat Ducato X290 (and its siblings Peugeot Boxer/Citroën Jumper) no longer holds the vehicle, often a simple adjustment of the cable is sufficient, without replacing components. The adjuster is located under the vehicle, near the gearbox or under the floor, accessible from below. Lift the vehicle and locate the handbrake cable: you will notice a threaded rod with an adjustment nut and a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut with a spanner (usually 13 or 15 mm), then adjust the nut to tension the cable. Turn clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. After each adjustment, test the handbrake from the cabin: the lever should have a travel of 3-4 clicks. Once the correct tension is reached, tighten the lock nut to secure the adjustment. Ensure the rear wheels turn freely with the brake released.
