The universal joint (or Cardan joint) is technically a spatial articulated quadrilateral; it allows motion to be transmitted between two non-coaxial shafts, meaning their extensions intersect at a point. This characteristic is why it is used in four-wheel drive vehicles to connect the gearbox to the differential, allowing motion transfer. The eccentric operation can cause wear on the roller cages (or needle bearings) and/or the joint, resulting in play and noise. A transmission overhaul kit, including a new joint and the corresponding circlips, is also available in the aftermarket. It is advisable to have this repair carried out by qualified personnel, as a simple mistake could cause significant damage.
